Reducing Your Direct Water Use

Most of the things on this checklist can be taken up immediately by the vast majority of people and will make an instant reduction to your water footprint:

Use a water-saving device in the toilet cistern.

Do not flush the toilet every time; "if it's yellow, let it mellow".

Ensure taps aren't left running unnecessarily, for instance, while brushing your teeth or washing your hands and face.

Fix any dripping taps or leaks as soon as possible.

Take a shower rather than a bath. A shower commonly uses between 30 and 80 litres (6 and 17 gallons), while a bath takes up 150 to 200 litres (33 to 44 gallons). If you must take a bath, why not make it more earth-friendly and share it with someone you love? And make it extra eco-friendly by using the cold bathwater to water your garden or plants when you're done.
